[Boston—Thursday, 16 May 1872]

May 16. Jamie ill at home, obliged to give up our engagement to dine at Colonel Greenes Wildwood. Miss Weston & Miss Chapman, two over-dressed and well read old ladies lunched with us. They believe in Jane Austen and rank The Bridal of Triermain above the poems of Tennyson! Read that excellent sketch of Mendelssohn so touching, so true and beautiful by his friend Edward Devrient.

Interesting letters received from Georgina Hogarth & M.L. Putnam.
