[Boston—Wednesday, 18 September 1872]

Wednesday. A lovely night—a busy day. Dear Jamie returned at night. His visit to Hanover was full of happiness. There is a social circle there to be proud of, inspired by a sincere love of literature and by a lofty sentiment of self control and true culture. How proud we are of New England when we hear of such communicating. Of one lady there a professor said “The whole plan of salvation shines in her eyes.”

Jamie was delighted with the enthousiasm for literature (English) which he saw there, delighted with the fervor for study and comparative contempt of wealth he saw among the students, delighted with the lovely situation of the place and the opportunity for true living which he saw there.
