[Boston—Friday, 9 May 1873]

May 9th Jamie has been to Lewiston Me. to lecture and should return in an hour now. He is full of engagements although the season proper has ended.

Tuesday last we dined at Longfellow’s to meet Mr. & Mrs Routledge (publisher). Mr. Sam. Longfellow & Professor Greene were present. It was a pretty dinner and Longfellow as usual a most affectionate and graceful host. The lilac leaves were just budding and the beautiful old place was renewing its youth.

Last Sunday Mr. & Mrs MacDonald & Greville were again here. His lecture on Macbeth Saty J. thought very fine—in the evening, Mrs Whitney, General Armstrong, Mr. & Mrs Long, C.C. Perkins came in. We had lovely music and a delightful “time”.

Sunday night MacDonald preached; it was a most touching service; afterward Mr. Ellis presented him with $2600 “from the ladies of Boston”. Mrs Scott-Siddons came afterward to supper.

Here we are at May 9th and such a poor record. Read Matthew Arnold’s Literature and Dogma yesterday, a fine book—though rather wordy & long.
