[Boston—Friday, 13 June 1873]
Friday June 13. Went to J’s office, found Mr. Longfellow and Mr. Greene, and we went together to see the lovely show of Rhododendrons, now on the Common. Mr. Greene is very feeble and Longfellow is attending upon him as if he were a little child. “I have heard two disagreeable things” said L. as we left the beautiful vision—“one lady said, as she passed me, what is the object of this” & another said “I wish I had gone to—(he lost the name) instead of coming here; I don’t care for looking at flowers!!” The show carried us back to Cobham Park and those June days 4 years ago, only four years!! when we were there with Dickens. How vividly he lives with us in these days; we sit and almost talk with him in the twilight.
