[Manchester—Monday, 23 June 1873]

Monday June 23. Manchester. Jamie was afflicted with Neuralgia so we hurried thither—yet why should I say hurried. Our rooms had been engaged, the question only remained why should we stay on the dusty streets and among city smells when we might come out among the clover. We packed Saturday and arrived at evening. It is very dry here, the farmers pray for rain, but the air is full of clover smells and yesterday & today have been gloriously beautiful days. Our two servant maids do not like overmuch to be left alone, in town, but they will soon be reconciled I trust.

Jamie has gone to town today.

Lizzy finished her visit suddenly and went to Mrs Baker’s to pass Sunday.

It was a warm week in town last week and the coolness and sweetness down here are really hard to believe. Mr. Stephan Bullard was seized with slight paralysis—nor does he recover.
