[Manchester—Thursday, 26 June 1873]

Thursday. June 26. Mrs Cabot of Beverly and Miss Sever called yesterday P.M. Mrs C. a good true woman.

In the evening took a wondrous walk by star-light and sunset and called at Mr. Cabot’s new home to ask right of way. A beautiful mansion it is. Ah! how glorious the scene was! We came in as the bells rang nine our senses filled with the glorious beauty of the world—the air is filled with fragrance—fireflies were abroad—and the world seemed strange and new in that weird light.

Today “J.” is in town, is going down the harbor with Capt. Benham of the Thursday Club. Reading the Antigone of Sophocles with intense delight—ah! Greece seems the very cradle of poetry, as we read these tragedies.
