[Manchester—Monday, 30 June 1873]

Monday—“J” went to town—another perfect day—the hay was not gathered in so I was able to lie in it and drink up sunshine.

Made the acquaintance of the people in our next apartment—a good family from Cambridge by the name of Rindge. They are very kindly disposed.

Read Plato’s Protagoras. These translations of Professor Jowett are so fine that it is a new thing to read Plato in them. I thoroughly understand it for the first time.
