[Cambridge—Tuesday, 23 June 1874]
Tuesday June 23. Left early in the morning for North Conway. Lizzy had not arrived—bade the women good-bye and pushed bravely off. Met Susan Hale in the cars who accompanied us as far as Portsmouth. The day was excessively sultry—no better weather at Conway, but happily we found mother pretty well & Sarah also. Took a short walk with mother before a great thunder-storm came down which lasted nearly all night.
