[Boston—Thursday, 4 November 1875]

Nov. 4. Arranged dress for Mr. Wild’s picture of Leonardo da Vinci for the benefit of the Children’s Hospital. Saw Mr. Appleton—told me an old lady upon the continent fell dead in love with him. She had a wooden-leg—have I indeed come to this I said. So I whipped her over the head with her own wooden leg and left her!!!

He gave me a curiously interesting acc’t also of meeting Eugene Benson in Venice and taking him and his wife to Egypt. He has brought home Sir Joshua Reynolds exquisite picture called “Simplicity” which he intends by and by to give to the Art Museum.

Found Celia at home. Mrs Lodge came later—then Lizzy.
