[Boston—Tuesday, 17 October 1876]

Tuesday. Jamie went again to Springfield. Trying to get a company of charity visitors together. Find it most difficult-- Busy drawing up papers etc.

Finished Charles Reade’s Love me little, love me long—not half so good as I thought and hoped. It seems to me integrally coarse, in places rather unnatural and showing a lack of imagination and gift of language for which I was not prepared. Plentiful wit and dramatic power make the story, but then do not interest me now as do some other qualities in a story-teller.
