[Philadelphia—Friday, 12 May 1876]

Friday. Dear J. went to lecture at Swarthmore. I went to make several interesting visits, especially on Dr. Furness, and afterward to the women’s building to set several matters right there. Found Mrs Gillespie depressed as she has been ever since our arrival. There is much jealousy working against her and her failure to satisfy the people who wished to come into the Women’s Building on Wed’y made her many enemies.

A family party at Mr. Brown’s in the Evening. His dear little daughter is our constant delight. She is a most tender loving little soul. We were obliged to give up an invitation to go to Mrs Owen Wister’s.
