[Manchester—Saturday, 19 August 1876]

Saturday. The beautiful mists and cooler atmosphere show us that summer is on the wing. It was too damp to sit out this morning.

In the afternoon called to see the Howes, Boardmans, Walter Cabots, Bartols—a very social pleasant time. Read in the morning Mr. Emerson’s Goethe. This is great enough for an era.
