[Manchester—Wednesday, 2 August 1876]

August 2d Wednesday. Finished Frothingham’s book. It is beautiful and inspiring. It gives me a fresh sense of Frothingham’s own wide intellectual power and integrity.

Exquisite weather! Dear J. is well.

Went to the Crescent Beach House in the afternoon. Saw Mr. & Mrs Whipple, Mrs Lesley, Lucretia and Susan Hale, Dr. Dix, Miss Chandler, Mrs Whitwell. The Whipples are very severe against Mr. Hillard. Mrs Hillard has been living with Mrs Lesley in Philadelphia and it was a sad trial to her to return Boston-ward. Turned out of house and home.
