[Manchester—Monday, 28 August 1876]

Monday 28. Exquisite day again. Jamie gone to town. Drove through the Essex woods alone together, the first time we have been able to do so this summer. The clear sweet air cool but like crystal was delicious.

Young Mrs Towne & Alice called. Jamie brought me a noble edition of Goethe’s works in exchange for a poor set we had—and a difference!!

We finished “Tasso” at night.
