[Boston—Wednesday, 3 January 1877]

Jan. 3. The bright cold winter weather continues. Jamie went to Hartford. Mabel Burnett called, looking very well and young and handsome. I do not yet go out.

Mrs Goddard called and was deeply interesting in her delight over Wm Morris’ Niebelungen [sic, for Nibelungen] poem, Miss Frothingham’s Sappho, Harold and other good things. Mrs Batchelder called but I was at lunch. Read German with Anna in the evening. Also the Makers of Florence a beautiful book just issued by Macmillan wh. he has sent me.
