Miss browning’s love of liberty, and her sympathy with modern Italian patriots, are gracefully and earnestly expressed in the reflections which she pours melodiously forth from her Casa Guidi windows at Florence. There are two parts to this poem—the first, written nearly three years ago, the second in 1851; the first breathing confident hope, the second grievous disappointment, yet not despair. Under the influence of an Italian sky the past and the future must to the poet appear in glaring colours, however stern reality may mar the present.
