E570304A. Aurora Leigh (New York, 1857).

Boston Post, 4 March 1857, p. 1.

As reprinted in The Brownings’ Correspondence, 24, 301.

[The first part of this brief notice consists of an extract from the review of Aurora Leigh in The Knickerbocker of March 1857, which is reprinted on pp. 293–294.]

We have never yet known five men who had read through “Hiawatha.” “Aurora Leigh,” in our view, is quite as hard and large a dose of poor reading. The good things in either bear no sort of proportion to the bad and indifferent.
