From theology to poetry is a natural step; and in the latter department of literature we have Poems Before Congress, by Mrs. Browning (Chapman and Hall); and The Exile’s Daughter, a Tale of the Italian War, by S. W. Fullom (Skeet). It has been remarked, we remember, how little good English poetry was called forth by the Russian war. Certainly the poetical primitæ of the Italian war promise even still worse. Being warm admirers of Mrs. Browning, and even very warm admirers of Miss Barrett, we are sincerely grieved that she should have committed such an error as the publication of this hysterical twaddle.
