The Commercial Journal and Family Herald, 20 December 1856, p. 2.

Addendum to The Brownings’ Correspondence, vol. 23.

From the affluent and musical character of the verse, and in incident and scenery; this is unquestionably the poem of the age, and places Mrs Browning far in advance of all poetesses. ancient or modern. The story is well conceived, and the interest sustained from first to last, and, although it possesses many errors, they are so superficial as not to materially affect its success. We have left our pencil-mark on many passages of great power and beauty, and shall return to the book again.
