We must confess to be better pleased to meet the late Mrs. Browning in prose than in poetry, and can but believe that had she eschewed her many unsuccessful invocations of the muse, she would have done more justice to her taste and talents. The remarks which this book contains are sensible and pertinent for the most part, although her opinions, like her poetry, are often exaggerated. She evidently had carefully studied the works of each class of poets whom she discusses, and had mastered their peculiarities, so as to form a correct judgment of their end and object. She, therefore, nicely discriminates between the respective styles of each, and comes to an apt conclusion upon their merits.
