The publication of this volume completes the collected American edition of Mrs. Browning’s works, including a “Memorial” by Mr. Theodore Tilton, which forms a worthy introduction to the writings of the gifted authoress. The articles which are here reproduced were originally published in the London “Athenæum,” and are now presented without change, as they came from the pen of Mrs. Browning. They consist of a series of somewhat desultory notes on the Greek Christian poets, commencing with Ezekiel, a writer of uncertain date, and closing with Maximus Margunius in the sixteenth century; and on some of the principal English poets from Chaucer to Wordsworth. If the comments on the “tuneful band” of which she was an illustrious member are less critical than poetical, they are full of exceeding interest from the nobleness and beauty of spirit in which they had their origin; they are rich in profound and suggestive thought; and overflow with the glorious fancies and wonderful audacities of expression to which she has given a congenial home in English literature.
