Addendum to The Brownings’ Correspondence, vol. 15.

We always feel a dislike to pass a sweeping censure on any literary production upon which we are invited to express an opinion. The language of encouragement and commendation is more in accordance with our feelings, but feelings should always be subordinated to duty, and by its inflexible requirements we are compelled to withhold our meed of approbation from these volumes. We have searched in vain through these dramatic pieces for a single passage that would place our author in a favourable light before the public, and we feel no small degree of mortification in having wasted so much profitable time in a pursuit which has proved so unpleasant and abortive.
