May 4th 1838.

Dear Sir,

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of yesterday’s date. It is not, I believe, customary to repeat the services of the Church <for> the reinterm<ent> of the dead. But this ceremony occurs so seldom, that we have no order or rule upon the subject. My first impression, I confess, was opposed to it; but upon a little reflection, I can see no impropriety in the repetition of this service, for, as you justly observe, it is strictly for the living & not for the dead; nor is there any part of it which is not suited to the pious feelings of mourners & relatives <a>t any time <for> any o<cc>asion which brings before them the memory of their departed friend[.] I will therefore comply with your request; and as you mention Friday Evening as the time at which you intend the Funeral to take place, I shall be with you about five O’ck of that day. I am sorry I shall not be disengaged earlier, & able to accept your kind invitation to Breakfast.
