Dear Sir

I defered answering your letter untill I had seen Mr. Calvert, and whom, for some time, I have been in daily expectation of seeing here. It was not however till Saturday last that I saw him, in my way thro’ Durham,

Dear Sir

On Saturday last I saw Mr. Calvert and gave him my permission to authorize any gentlemen he may think proper to see the House and premises. I am fully sensible that my quitting Coxhoe is my own act and I thank you for your polite wish to have that fairly understood. Had I proposed to have remain[ed] longer in the North, if with your permission, I should have been most happy to have continued your tenant. I should not so long have neglected to answer your polite letter, but that I wished to see Mr. Calvert before I wrote, and who for a long time had promised to come here.
