My dear Sir
The demand of Messrs Hill Davies & McNeil is correct. I find on inquiry that it is for the amount of one of several Bills which your Uncle granted to settle an old outstanding account of [illegible word] of London. I made the settlement for him by his paying £200 Stg in Cash and granting these Bills for the balance: and I did so under the impression that at the time it was convenient to him to have the payment postponed. You will therefore act correctly on paying the £156.8/6 which is the Currency amount of the Bill including interest and prin. and a sum of £6.3/ of commission.
Messrs Dawes & Co have also requested a settlement of the account of one Biby a Bootmaker amounting to £73. Stg and £44 of interest—in all £117 Stg. The last item of the acct is dated as far back as June 1825 so that the statute of limitations has run against it: but that of course is not the question if you be satisfied that the amount is due. Messrs Dawes show an old letter of your Uncles without date, referring to the transactions with them– In strict law therefore I think the account may not be receivable—but if there be reason to believe that it really is due, you will of course settle it.
Your father has written me that the papers in Barrett V Vermont, which I sent him by Mr Marston, have not reached him. It is my intention to write a close Copy in cambric paper & transmit it by next packet, if I do not then learn that he has received what I had previously sent. Our object, is to get English Counsels opinion in the complex legal questions involved in the case, before proceeding farther.
From your fathers letter he appears expecting you with an Exemplification of your Uncles will, to produce in the certain proceedings in the Appellate Court for payt of the Retreat Compensation monies. Have you taken any trouble in this subject. If you have not write me and I will by the next packet send the Exemplification under the Island Seal. I am
