Published in The Brownings’ Correspondence, 4, 340 (in part).
Newcastle on Tyne
1 Oct 1838.—
My dear Nephew–
I am Sure you will be surpriz’d but I hope agreeably so, in hearing from your old Uncle James, who I can assure you, whatever may be appearances feels a warm Interest in his Nephew Sam’s welfare, & great gratification in constantly hearing of his excellent conduct, & most praise-worthy executions. Now, my dear Sam I wish to employ you under the rose, for I sadly fear I am dealt hardly with in Jamaica–
You are aware I have put Spring, S[c]hawfield & Thatchfield under a Receiver. Mr R Barrett. Can you learn from [sic] me how these properties are manag’d—if Mr S. Barrett takes any undue part in the Managt—& how he conducts himself. Can you arrive at the value of S[c]hawfield & the Penn Thatchfield, & what they would let for?
Also how “Bamboo” is manag’d, & if that Estate would let & for what annually–
Also if you could ascertain what is best to be done with Lapland & Fustic Grove—pray get me all the necessary information, if possible.–
I am advis’d to come out. Say if you think I could effect any benefit, equal to the risk I should run—if I do come out, where to land at, what to bring with me, & whether you could receive me at Cinnamon Hill.
I expect [your] Papa here in a few days. If there is anything I can send you from hence, pray name it & I shall be most happy to do so.– fail not to write me by return & believe me My dear San
Your affectionate Uncle
James G. Clarke
