Dear sir

You ask me if I had instructed Mr Scarlett to oppose your demand against my properties; I will be candid with you, I have done so, being convinced of the Enormity, not to say injustice of your claim. You had the Estates from July 1803, to Feby 1806. 2 years & a half during which time you & old Mr Plummer drew bills to the amount of £12.306/14/2, in addition to which you now call upon me for upwards of £7000 Sterg, making together £19.306/14/2, and this immense Sum to pay the ordinary contingencies of two crops for none of the Contingencies of 1806 were paid during which time not a single Slave was bought nor was there any undertaking of extraordinary work Executed. You take credit to yourself in giving up the Estate so readily. I have however a copy of an order of the Court of Chancery to compel you to do so. I mention this Circumstance to shew you I am not quite ignorant of what is passing on your side the Water[.] I have written by this Packet to Mr Scarlett & directed him to act in this affair for me as if he was the person involved. You will therefore of course see him.

I wish much to write you on other subjects but I will refrain My Father, I am afraid, is by your means dreadfully embarrassed I am I should wish to say Dear Uncle.
