My dear Sir

I have to thank you most sincerely for the kind manner in which you have obtained me a commission in the peace. It is most flattering & a great gratification to myself to receive my commission from such a quarter. I shall endeavour to follow your kind advice to the very letter, being fully sensible of the evil that is engendered by taking an active part in public life in this country I have determined as far as it lays in my power to avoid all violent parties as long as I remain in the Island–

I have taken advantage of your kind offer & directed Aikman to apply to you for my fees. I am truly sorry to hear of Lady Rowes illness & much regret she had not postponed her departure from the Retreat till she had recovered more strength, my best regards to her. I hope to hear better accts next week[.] Porter in bottles is 3/6 Pr doz Pale ale 4/ – Mr Wauchope has provided himself with a house consequ[e]ntly Rebeccas is still vacant. I think however I have put things in a train to get her a tenant. I go to Hanover tomorrow to take charge of two Properties—here I am not yet settled. I heard from my father this packet he insists on Rent being charged & no grounds. I fear I shall have some trouble.
