My dear Sir
I am sorry I have not been able as I intended to visit your people at Retreat this week, but hope by divine permission to see you on perhaps monday evening, or more probably tuesday. There is to be a meeting of the Kirk Committee at Falmouth on Monday. If I be able to attend it I <…> proceed forward in the after<no>on. Perhaps I may meet you the<re>. Indeed I wish you would go, for it is to settle & a<rr>ange the future means of Support of the ministers. Revd Mr Murray has been here today to see you & get your advice as a magistrate. In the Sixth number of the Christian Record which has been just published I see it mentioned that “The Cinnamon Hill negroes did really manifest a disposition to Revolt at the time of the rebellion– That the people of Cornwall estate the residence of the Revd Mr Waddell Scottish Missionary, were worse, & were Such joined with the Spirit of insubordination manifested by those on Cinnamon Hill as to compel Mr Barrett to leave & go to his brothers estate Oxford in Trelawny for protection, & that it was the Baptists of the latter estate who persuaded to Sons of the Kirk at Cornwall & Cinnamon Hill to return to quietness & their former labours”[.] I find it necessary to write a letter concerning this & some other things in the Same number of the Christian Record & beg your opinion of the Statements here made by first opportunity. It is added “S. M. Barrett Esqr may of course be appealed to by any one who doubts this statement.”
Last weeks “Watchman” gives great praise to our address to the governor & his Excellency’s reply. And the Xn Record greatly praises Mr Blyths letter in answer to Leitourgos who published an attack on us in the 3rd number you probably recollect. I wonder what has drawn f<or>th these mis-statements so pointedly in connection with my name<.> I believe however they a<re> untrue.
