Dear Sir.
Previous to being favored with yours of 13. Inst. I had written you a few lines by Mr Castle who proposed calling at Cinnamon Hill on his way to Falu I note your remarks respecting the projected renewal of the Hill House at Cornwall. I approve of your plan of having |Vats|, they will be made, I should think, at a less cost and generally work better than Cisterns.
I fear however, the returns of next Crop would not justify our going too great an outlay at present.– Say that a Still might be got in time & the whole amount would not exceed £1000. I think it would be better to wait ’till after the next Crop is taken off before we decide upon the alteration, & so I have written to your Father, promising to send him an estimate of the Expence, which he will look for in another packet or two, after the one now to Sail. It is to be hoped that matters in a little time may become more settled to enable us to see our way better. I am glad to hear your Rent roll is increasing– I am satisfied there is nothing else to be done so likely to bring the people to their senses & enable us to get continuous labor from them—where it has been enforced on this side matters are gradually improving—& a fall plant is now being established pretty generally– The prospects however for the next Crop are deplorable. I am sorry to hear your roads have suffered so much by the late Flood. The Seasons appear to have been very general I have scarcely seen the Sun since I came of & the Roads thro’ the parish are almost impassible. I am glad to hear that Fowlers Lease is safe, altho’ altered from the original—a complete trick of his I suspect—it should, after being executed have been g<iven> b<ac>k to Mr Tinkler to be copied in the P.tation book, & returned to me to be recorded. Perhaps you will be able to prevail upon Mr Fowler to give up, in that case, you will no doubt be able to Lease it to greater advan<tage>. Mr Castle will send you a Copy of Hamiltons Lease for Mr Tinkler to copy. I am Sorry to learn that neither have forked out in payment of my drafts. I hope it has put you to no inconvenience. As soon as the weather takes up I shall start for St Elizabeth in search of stock & will be over to see you during Court. Your Letters forwarded by the newsman on Saty to the care of Mr Braine will always reach me the same day.
