Sir

The foregoing copy of correspondence with Mr Carey will sufficiently make known the occasion of My present communication[.]

Since your return to this country I have waited in the hope of hearing from you on the Subject but feel averse to remain longer in Suspense.

I have no particular wish to remain here unless it be perfectly agreeable to your father & to yourself, and though it should be So I would much rather pay a reasonable rent for the house & pasture than continue as heretofore nominally rent free. I use the word nominally as far as I am concerned, Since a Sum more than equal to the rent is deducted yearly from my Salary in consequence by the Missionary Society in Scotland who therefore are the only party that had heretofore derived a pecuniary benefit from it, while I do in effect pay a heavy rent for it.
