My dear Sam
The proposition contained in your last letter with reference to the Recievership required some degree of consideration; & I will state why: I at first thought if I acceded to it, that James Clarke might imagine I did so in opposition to his nominee, & being unwilling to create dissention where none previously existed; I acknowledge I hesitated in accepting your offer; on a further consideration however I have thought otherwise, for James would naturally suppose I have both your Interests at heart, & being placed in a responsible situation when your joint Interests were at stake, I feel I may do somewhat in allaying that angry feeling which has for some time past existed between you, & which I have little doubt has been fostered by parties who care only for self Interest. In acceeding therefore to the nomination of Reciever for That? & Schaw? jointly with yourself, & so as I shall feel myself in a somewhat delicate situation, you must be aware that I shall use of my best exertion to reconcile my Uncle & yourself & do all in my Power to prevail on both parties & come to an amicable arrangement: I shall write to James that it is under these circumstances I have agreed to accept the nomination you have offered me– I must however dear Sam at the same time tender you my sincere thanks for this mark of your personal regard–
Sent Petition to house of Assembly for Rum duties–
affectionately yr
