My dear Sam
Your letter was most welcome to us, for which I am much obliged, it contained much more information than I had hoped to receive before you had seen the properties– Mr Atkinson sailed a month ago, I presume therefore you have heard from him or seen him before this, reaches you, I did not see him, but I wrote to him before he sailed requesting him to send the Accounts & proceeds of this present Year, for we have only received the Accts up to Augt 1838 & that lately, with a very small remittance for 2 Years, but during that time they had purchased provision ground to the amount of £530 as well as Cattle & horses– Under the present system I cannot suppose it can be much to Mr Atkinsons interest to retain the management of Whitehall, as he can hardly expect to furnish any great Supplies for the Estates from his house at Kingston, for you know he is a Merchant, and I assure you his Accounts have been no joke– I therefore wait to hear from him on his Arrival, and to see what will be the balance he will send of this Year for his calculations of the expenses of a Pen were very large even under the present System– Mr Hutton however writes us that the whole expense of labour of all Kinds this Year is only £280 which is quite inconsistent with what he (Mr H.) foretold– I have been consulting a friend about sending you out a power of Attorney at once to supercede Mr Atkinson, or await the chances of his resigning of his own accord, but shd he not give me Satisfaction in the Accounts & remittance now expected I shall act decidedly– I would rather avoid if possible giving any cause of coolness to him, as he is a very agreeable & I believe honourable Man, but I am confident he is hoodwinked by Mr Hutton, for in reply to our observations he said that he was confident he would do the property justice as long as it was under his Management– My Wife wants to fill up the remainder of the sheet with her own observations, and I am just setting off for Kinnersley for a few days– When you write pray tell me something of Charles, I hear he is delighted with his new mode of life[.] I hope the climate will agree with him as well as it does with you– My kindest love to him & Yourself and Ever believe me
