My dear Sam

We were much dissapointed in receiving a letter, instead of seeing yourself, but I must give you great credit for firmness of purpose in resisting temptation.

Our ball went off most capitally & I trust to the general satisfaction of all present. Poor Maria was unable to attend having had slight remittent Fever all the week, but to day she is very much better I am glad to say.

I made application to the governour for 100 of the Niggers immediately I heard of their beeing captured. And I must ask you to select them for me In my absence. It is rather serious I only wrote last week to Gooch to build houses immediately to receive same as two or three Captains of men of War had promised if they were successful in taking any slaves to land them at Lucia [sic, for Lucea] or Montego Bay. I will desire Greenwood to see you on the subject of getting them down to Harding Hall.

I bought a Gig on purpose to do with less horses & I sold Mr Davalls carriage for £50. I had a letter by last post from my Uncle he was talking of sailing by the next Packet.

I am anxious to get home but intend to wait until the Court of Chancery is over. We spend Xmas with the Bishop who is a jolly old Fellow- The house will adjourn on Friday next.
