My dear Barrett
I hasten to reply to your letter respecting Easthams, and to assure you of my best service, in your behalf to become purchaser– The subject quite escaped me yesterday with multiplicity of business; or I would most certainly have alluded to the subject having all along been under the impression that it would be worth even more to you than any one else– Should everything go on as I |expect| (for a writ of [illegible words] is easily quashed or delayed) we shall have to take the property at the value set upon it by the Jury, after which I presume we must pay Messrs |Gray| the compliment of offering it to them but it will be a mere compliment as I know well that they are without the means of money in the matter. My cousin William is the Principal in this matter and in his name I promise to give you the preference and I doubt not but the payment will be easily arranged—in a case of this kind money down is required but we could arrange the matter to your satisfaction I have no doubt provided that two thirds or so were paid within three months but as to this we can I repeat have no difficulty– I can only give an opinion as to the value which the late owners report viz £5000. but I would not be surprised if a Jury valued it for £4000–4500—which as things go it ought to be worth, of this you will be the Judge in the day of |extrait|—it depends on what condition the Estate is in I should suppose for if a crop of 50bhd were on the ground it would certainly be worth £5000– In conclusion I have only to say that you may calculate on having the property if you are determined, so you can go to Retreat with that additional piece of information
