My dearest Edmund:

It will seem to you a long time since my last—of date 8th Oct.—because of my usually frequent letters, tho in fact it is little over a month. …

I saw the dear Brownings day before yesterday—we are in a stone’s throw now of Casa Guidi—but alas, alas, they left Florence yesterday for Rome, where they winter on account of her health. This was a disappointment. Other literary friends have gone the same way; so, that the frivilous [sic] are chiefly those who pass the gay season here this year. …
