… It is worthy of remark, that the Brownings (just now on a visit to Rome,) are permitted quietly to inhabit the Casa Guidi, after which is named Mrs. Browning’s poem, which denounces in such unqualified terms both the Pope and the present Grand Duke of Tuscany; … Surely Leopold is no less amiable than false, or the nest whence the poet sings her strong melodies, would ere this have been stirred up and the bird sent back to her Albion oak. John Bull is a giant to the puny Italians, and his knotty honesty a club, which frightens Duplicity’s polished blade back into its sheath. …
