I write to you both for advice & to ask a favour. I have conceived a comedy—& I want hints as to how to work it out. It seems to me that there is no reason why one should not write as genuine a comedy as those old Elizabethan ones, if one wd only, like the old poets, take what one sees round one, & honestly draw that. As it is our comedies seem to me utterly rotten ghastly conventionalitsms.—Look at Brownings Colombe’s Birthday for instance …
