My dear Barrett.
In consequence of a letter (that was forwarded to me here from your house) from London w’ch I received on Monday, and w’ch was not of the most pleasant kind, being from a man of the name of Hilhouse who I have been indebted to, a large Bill for 2 or 3 Years and who I have never been enabled to pay, my Father always having refused to do so—when I was in Town he made several applications to me and not always with Civility, which I have as often put off in hope of this matter being concluded, and that then my Father wd pay what I owed, however the long and short of the Matter is, that Hilhouse’s patience is worn out, and has now wrote me that unless I pay him before the 10th of Octor—that I shall certainly be arrested—which wd be a devil of a thing– I am therefore induced once more to tresspass upon your kindness, and to beg your assistance in the loan of One hundred & fifty Pounds– I am really quite ashamed in making this application to you, but I shall be enabled to discharge my large debt to you in a short period of time I hope, but until then I will either give you my note or any thing else you may wish– Will you let me hear from you by return of Post– Mr P. is not return’d. I did expect this morning but I am disappointed, as he was to have met papers here from Shawe which are arrived, and which I hope will conclude the business immediately—if I can procure you a Brace of Pheasants & some Birds I will send them tomorrow—all this circle desire their best love to Mary, and children and Ever believe me My dear Barrett
Yours most faithfully
Jno A. G. Clarke
