Published in The Brownings’ Correspondence, 8, 335 (in part).

7 Suffolk St

Monday [11 March 1844] [1]

Dear Sir

As I have not been able to obtain from Mr James Clarke any Statement of your Claim on his Father’s Estate, and can find no trace of Mr Moore’s Letter to which you referred, it will be well that you should state to me what that Claim is–

I am endeavouring to realise something from the wreck of the Late Mr Clarke’s West India Securities, but the debts of Mr James G. Clarke the residuary Legatee will swallow up all that can be obtained–

I am dear Sir

yours faithfully

John Clayton
