Tuesday [18 June 1844]

My dear friend—I am more sorry than I can express to have missed seeing you yesterday– I returned late in the evening so thoroughly done up with a week’s constant company in Town that I am today quite incapable of the 8 mile’s walk which going to Pangbourne would render necessary. I can hardly tell you how sorry I am for this—how very very sorry—the more so as I have been partly staying with dear Miss Barrett who enquired for Mr Cary & has 2 vols coming out—very remarkable though with many faults. —I meant to have returned by Windsor but was forced to stay over a great breakfast yesterday at Mr Kenyon’s—& could not stay out the day because I had refused so many invitations on the plea of being compelled to go home– I am so sorry to have missed you dearest Mrs Cary!— Make my kindest remembrances to Mr Cary–
