Addendum to The Brownings’ Correspondence, vol. 5.

Dear Sir

The proposition made by Mr Elgie in the note you sent me yesterday, as respects the Rent of the Cottages & their dilapidations, is certainly exactly similar to that offered on the 18th June but to which I demurred, therefore I cannot see why Mr Elgie should suppose, because the time is more advanced, that I should be more disposed to accede to his terms now than then– I will give up as landlord my right & interest in them, without reference to rents, when he will give me an undertaking from the proper Parties that in doing so, I shall be free from all claims & charges whatsoever, either for delapidations or otherwise. I have been deceived by this Mr Elgie before, & it behoves me to be careful of him.
