Stoke St. Mary, Somerset

30 November [1860]

The last sad scene today! I had placed the poor remains with my own arms, in its shroud-had lifted it into the coffin—and kissed the poor pale face of death—daily, and for the last time this morning—none came near unless I were by. This afternoon—in Thur[l]bear Church Yard, in a sweet and lovely spot, we left her. Lance our kind pastor saying the last office, with a voice choked with tears—our three innocent children—standing by. The poor heart then knew its own bitterness—and so ends my great human love—in this world at least. The great God gave me this pure sweet loving heart, after years of anxiety—he gave me all that sweet happiness—and now he has taken her to himself. Blessed be his holy name. May he forgive my great sins—sic mea anima cum Henrietta.
