First January 1846
My Dear Duyckinck.
You were an early as you have been a true friend to Miss Barrett’s reputation in America. In right of a claim well-tried & well-established to a little memorial like this I beg you to accept the original sheets of her Poems with alterations & emendations in her own hand, and the autograph Preface. May each year as it flows into your hand bring you some proof that you have, as in this case, served well the cause of noble men & women.
Sincerely Your Friend
Cornelius Mathews

Evert A. Duyckinck Esq.
