March 5th 1846.

Sir,

It is my painful duty to inform you that my Father is numbered with the dead after a fortnight’s sickness he died on the 1st of this month

During his illness he desired me to write you to acknowledge the receipt of the kind present you sent him and to say that he and Mrs Barrett were very thankful to you for it

Will you allow me also to say that my Father was building a house which he has left unfinished[.] I should much like to complete building it which would enable me the better to support his Widow could you therefore assist me in doing so by bestowing the same favours upon me as you have done upon your servant my Father by giving me the situation in the |distil| house and allowing me the same privileges as he had I would endeavour to serve you with fidelity and should ever feel grateful to you for all your favours[.]

Hoping you will pardon the liberty I take in thus addressing you[.]
