My dear Baroness
I have so often wished to write to you that I am now trying to do so without being sure of your address– I heard of you last from dear Professor Tafel & other friends who visited you on their way to the N.C. Meeting last year in England– I have been a solitary wanderer now for more than a year & half—since I lost my beloved Mother last June twelvemonth– I spent last Winter here & at Rome & intended this Winter to go to Naples, but these terrible earthquakes have taken away my wish to go there at present—and I am rather undecided where to go– One of my plans is to go in the Spring to Paris, on my way to England and I often think I shall fix my pied à terre at Paris, rather than in England for many reasons– I hope you will write to me if you get this & tell me of yourself and dear Nina– Is Capt Inglefield at home or at Sea? & where is this?– I see vague, but curious, accounts of a certain Baron Guldenstübbe & Sisters extraordinary mediums in Paris, who are greatly run after & surpass Mr Hume. Of the latter I have heard great wonders & most entirely authentic, during his stay here two years ago–
There is also a Moldavian Prince mentioned–
My friend Mrs Browning, the Poetess, is greatly interested in all these things—she is in heart New Church– So is also Powers the American Sculptor & several here– If you can tell me any particulars about this Guldenstübbe it would be very interesting– Also tell me what you think of my coming to live at Paris—& if I could get a small nice apartment at a moderate rate unfurnished?– I begin to be tired of wandering with all my things, books &c packed away in London.
I have unfortunately the home in Onslow Square, where we lived on my hands, the furniture was sold & it has never been let. This is a great loss to me, & till something is done with it I cannot at all know what my income will be–
Were you not pleased with dear good Dr Tafels? He has always been so kind to me– I travelled last (not this) summer in Switzerland with him & Fraulein V. Schilling & as my Brother Fredk went first to Wiesbaden with me when they left me, it was the first beginning of my being quite alone– I spent last summer at Geneva where I was much interested in the Dictations by Tables—mentioned in Dr Roessinger’s “Journal de l’Ame[”] a most interesting periodical—which I will tell you more about– If you get this please answer soon–
