My dearest Wife
It is nearly one oclock at night—& I have just returned from the theatre … I am off from here on Monday morning … I called on the Benzons & Mrs B. was most cordial & pressed me strongly to come & stay there—but I would not. I dine there tomorrow with Browning & they wanted me to stay & dine with Lord Lytton the next day—but I shall be gone. The sketch is done. Russell S. writes to me today after seeing it at Brucciani’s—“I think it A.1.”—old Peabody is delighted. … Little Hen. Adams (why not chicken) the other day swelled up immensly & stood on his toes like a little Badtom [sic] cock for is the only person who did not approve the Peabody sketch—but he is a Pal. to Palgrave—Basta– …
