Dear Sir
There has unquestionably been ample time to communicate with my Agent in Jamaica on the subject of the Wharf since I conversed with you upon it, but I am sorry to say that I have not yet received such information as to enable me to afford you the definite answer you require for the purpose of transmitting it to your friends Messrs Innes & Cadien–
The foot in the Wharf has been in so dilapidated a state for some time that we had lost many of its former customers, & it is only now on considerable repairs being done to it, & many improvements made, that we are again getting back its fair proportion of business. I thought by the last packet that I should have been able to have formed some opinion of the value to be put upon it from the receipts of a quarter of the present year, but my agent has rather puzzled me by the following heading of his report. “Account of Wharfage on Trelawney Wharf Quarter ending 30th April 1846” now believing that it takes its note from Jany 1st, the 30th of April would make the interval of time a third instead of a fourth of the year, which of course would make a cost difference as suggestive of the value of the Premises. I therefore must wait until I get an explanation, before I can put my price upon the Wharf in order to its being let–
Messrs Innes & Cadien being the first applicants are justly entitled to the first offer, & they shall have it, altho since then I have had three others–
