Dear Sir
Mr Roberts having informed me of your intention of renting your wharf here I have taken the liberty of addressing you which I do with much diffidence.
Having now managed the wharf for you for the last six years may perhaps give me some claim for the preference in the event of your leasing it and trust I have not lost that kind feeling which induced you to place me here at first—there are few persons here in the present depressed state of things would give a large rent but as I have made friends here and given satisfaction to the merchants who are willing to give me a share of their support as a wharfinger I am not anxious to enter into a new line of life and having a wife and young family to support would prefer remaining in the same line of business in which I have been for some time[.] I would make you an offer of £600.0 p an and give the best security for the punctual payment of same should you be disposed to accept of this offer I would take it either from 1st Aug last or 1st January 1847
I am happy to say the seasons are every thing the planter could wish and the country has seldom shewn a better prospect of a good crop and trust that the change in the sugar duties will not have the injurious effect in lowering the price of En[g]lish collonial [sic] sugar that many anticipate[.]
