Addendum to The Brownings’ Correspondence, vol. 1.

My dear Barrett
I was much grieved to learn that you had been so much in town, of which I had no idea until after your return home– Nor indeed did I know that you were in town till the day you called on me, or I should have made an Effort to See you. I hope to hear that you are quite recovered. Yesterday I had a letter from my brother to announce the arrangement he had made with Rd Barrett about paying Edwards legacy. He has drawn the bills on me & they have been left for acceptance. But before I accept them it will be necessary for you to apprize me of the amount of the sum you advanced to Edward last year which must be deducted from one of the bills. It will be proper also that you should write to B P S & Co to desire them to pay on half the amount of the bills when due & I will deposit with them an acknowledgement that the amount of the bills paid on your account is to be deducted from the Sum for which I hold a Mortgage on your Estate. My brother had not received all my instructions on the Subject, one or two of the packets having been taken. But he has transacted the business in the Most judicious manner & I am Satisfied with the arrangement he has made– The bills are on various dates from 3 to 12 months so that the greatest part of them will fall upon the approaching crop–
I am anxious to hear of Sam, from whom I have had no intelligence since he left us– He went off at such short notice that I had not time to procure him any letters, nor indeed to see him. I am bound hand & foot to the drudgery of the law which so devours all my time that I can spare none for society, & hardly to write a letter but I am not the less anxious on that account about my friends & in particular as to all that concerns you & yours. Let me have therefore a good account of you & the Barretts & your little numerous family, and believe me ever my dear Barrett

P.S. I sent all the papers respecting your advance to Edwd last year to B P & S. so that I have no memorandum of the amounts. I hope you will be able to read this. I write it in the Court of Exchange in the middle of a cause.
